Window Rock. This sandstone formation is called in the Navajo language
Tségháhodzáni (translated: perforated rock
or the rock with a hole in it) and is
one of the seven wonders of Navajoland. Carved by centuries of wind and water,
the arch is 200 feet tall with a hole 47 feet in diameter.
It gave the name to the near city, now the capitol of the Navajo Nation.
The history. Window Rock is important to the Navajos and
their culture. It was one of the 4 places where Navajo medicine men go
to get water for the ceremony that is held for rain - the Water Way Ceremony
(Navajo: Tóhee).
The visit. In the heart of the Navajo Nation (and close to their
administrative offices) you can visit the fascinating Window Rock
Tribal Park and the Navajo Nation Veterans Memorial Park (photo to the right),
which honors those who served in the U.S. military (like
the Navajo Codetalkers of World War II, who transmitted messages in their
native language, a code the Japanese could never break).
Often you can find stands at the park where Navajos sell their beautiful and
famous handmade crafts like jewelry, baskets and rugs.
