USA
HISTORY
Background:
Britain's American colonies broke with the mother country
in 1776 (4th of July, Independence Day) and were recognized as the new nation
of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
With the installment of the Constitution (17th of September 1787,
effective 4th of March 1789) it became a modern democracy.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the
original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent
and acquired a number of overseas possessions.

Flag: thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating
with white; there is a blue rectangle in the upper hoist-side corner
bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset
horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of
five stars. The 50 stars represent the 50 states, the 13 stripes represent
the 13 original colonies.
The United States Flag is the third oldest of the National Standards of the world;
older than the Union Jack of Britain or the Tricolor of France. The flag was
first authorized by Congress June 14, 1777. This date is now observed as
Flag Day throughout America. The flag was first flown from
Fort Stanwix, on the site of the present city of Rome, New York, on August 3, 1777.
It was first under fire for three days later in the Battle of Oriskany,
August 6, 1777.
The name "Old Glory" was given to our National Flag August 10, 1831, by
Captain William Driver of the brig Charles Doggett.

And the sons of men are blazing
Their priceless right of way.
Come stand beside the rivers
Within our valleys broad.
Stand here with heads uncovered,
In the presence of our God!
While all around, about us
The brave, unconquered band,
As guardians and landmarks
The giant mountains stand.
Not alone for gold and silver
Is Arizona great.
But with graves of heroes sleeping,
All the land is consecrate!
O, come and live beside us
However far ye roam
Come and help us build up temples
And name those temples "home".

PHOENIX
HISTORY
The Pueblo Grande ruins, which were occupied between 700 A.D. and 1400 A.D.
by a well established, civilized community,
testify to Phoenix ancient roots.
Phoenix's modern history begins in the second half of the 19th century.
In 1867, Jack Swilling of Wickenburg had a vision about the expansive
Salt River Valley. He saw farm land, all it needed was water. So he
organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company which began digging
a canal to divert some of the water of the Salt River onto the lands of
the Valley. By March 1868, water flowed through the canal.
On Feb. 25, 1881 "The Phoenix Charter Bill" (signed by Governor John C. Fremont)
made Phoenix an incorporated city.
By the turn of the century, the population of Phoenix had reached 5,554 -
by 1930 48,118 and by 1950 a population of 106,000 that placed it 99th
among American cities.

The phoenix bird symbolizes immortality, resurrection and life after death.
In ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology, it is associated with the sun god.
The newest design was established 1990.

SCHÄRDING

& ST.MARIENKIRCHEN near SCHDG.
HISTORY OF SCHÄRDING
The town was mentioned for the first time as "Scardinga" in a document (804 A.D.).
Since the 10th century the powerful counts of Vormbach-Neuburg
formed it to the midpoint of their count shafts, collecting tolls and
customs fees. In 1160 the counts of Andechs followed them and 1248 the domination
of the Bavarian Wittelsbacher began. They brought Schärding into the
lively Inn-trade, especially with salt, ores, wine, silk, glass, wood, grain,
cloth ware and cattle. At that time the development of the two pretty
city places, the "Upper" and the "Lower", took place.
The economic importance stepped early to the political, especially as the
Habsburger tried to expand their power to the river Inn at the end of the 13th century.
In the progress of the emerging battles - which did not stop before the
'Innviertel' (area around the river Inn) became Austrian again (1779)
and also after the battles against the French (1816) - the Bavarian dukes
rebuilt Schärding to a strong fort. This as well as the importance as
trading-town brought large disadvantages to Schärding. Almost in each century
the war stormed over the city in all violence for several times.
In addition there were fires and many heavy floods.
Schärding was involved in the war of the Landshut succession (around 1500),
the war of the Spanish succession (1701-1714) and the
war of the Austrian succession (1741-1748), after those the troops of Napoleon
burned down the castle and the city (1809). Even in the world war II
Schärding did not remain spared of destructions.
When Schärding became again Austrian after the Congress of Vienna in 1816,
it got into an economically corner and at a strong customs boundary:
the old trade relations were cut, the Inn not existing anymore as a trading path,
since entirely new traffic connections were formed through the industrialization
and the railroads.
After 1945 the tourism raised through the further extension of Schärding
as a Kneipp-spa with important gastronomy.
