Robbers Roost Location: west of Sedona, Coconino Forest, Northern Arizona
Driving Distance: 20 miles from Sedona; about 115 miles from Phoenix to Sedona (100 miles on I-17 north, then exit 298, 15 miles on AZ-179 to Sedona); total about 135 miles from Phoenix.
Hiking Distance: 1.5 miles one way
Hike Time: about 40 minutes one way
Direction:
From the center of Sedona: go south on 89A (towards Cottonwood) about 10 miles to the Red Canyon Road (= FR 525), turn right, follow the road for about 3 miles to the point where FR 525C goes to the left, follow FR 525C for about 7 miles. There you can see a rough road going to the right (FR 9530). Drive it a short distance (1 mile) up to the top of the hill (only with a 4-wheel-drive) to the trailhead and park there.

Robbers Roost. It is a cave with a unique window on the north side of a red butte. The cave got its name from the imagination that it would be a good hideout for robbers. It was used by a moonshiner during Prohibition about 70 years ago.

the butte of Robbers Roost, the cave is located on the opposite side The hike. If you didn't drive the last mile (only in a high clearence vehicle) hike to the trailhead. You see Casner Mountain in front of you and a red butte a little bit to the right of you. Robbers Roost is on the far side of that butte.
Usually you will see some cairns marking the trailhead. The trail goes right straight downhill to the bottom of a ravine, then up to the other side.
Note: From the trailhead you can see two caves on the butte. These are not Robbers Roost which is located on the opposite side of the butte!
At the bottom you follow the trail to the north (left, if you face the butte). It curls around to the north side of the butte, climbing up about 2/3 of the way to the top the trail forks. Turning right it will lead you to the top. But we turn left, follow the trail and walk out on the steep face of the butte on the slickrock (be careful, but the rock gives good traction). Coming around the butte you will see the cave with rock walls at its mouth.
view towards northeast Looking out of the cave you can see Bear Mountain and Maroon Maountain in the northeast. Looking through the unique window in the cave (towards southeast) is an amazing experience and gives you a beautiful view with the Red Rocks on the horizon.
